Journal 6 Shel Collum

Part One: I personally have enjoyed the profile of Mr. Tanimoto. He is interesting because he survives the bombing unscathed and he is doing whatever he can to help the injured people around him. He brings water to the people who are begging for water until he moves on to Asano Park and helps out the people there. Next, He ferries people across the river to higher ground and his next plan was to get a doctor to come to the park and tend to the people there. "Mr. Tanimoto was still angry at the doctors. He decided that he would personally bring one to Asano Park-by the scruff of the neck, if necessary". Mr. Tanimoto feels bad that he isn't injured so he uses that feeling to help as many people as he can. There was more people working like Mr. Tanimoto to help the injured, but the majority of the people were in such bad shape, that they couldn't help as much as he could.

"Little Boy" was a 9,000 pound bomb dropped on Hiroshima

Part Two: The bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima was actually the smaller of the two that were dropped on Japan. The "Little Boy" was 9,000 pound  and packed the force of 12-15 tons of TNT. "Little Boy" was delivered by the B-29 named the "Enola Gay" that was specifically designed to drop this large of a bomb. 60% of the people that were killed in Hiroshima died from the intense heat of the bomb, essentially incinerating the bodies. Many others died later from the burns they received from the blast. Roughly 30% of the casualties came from debris falling on people from the buildings collapsing

  1. I think it's really interesting that 30% of the casualties came from the debris falling on people from the buildings collapsing. I have no idea and I think it was interesting to learn that. I think your research paints a better picture in people's head describing when the bomb was dropped.

  2. I also find Mr. Tanimoto to be interesting its impressive that he goes above and beyond what is expected of a survivor of the bombing.

  3. I also think Mr. Tanimoto is very interesting. He obviously has a big heart because he feels bad because he's not injured like some of his peers are. It's cool to find the facts behind that the heat actually caused people's deaths, not the bomb itself.

  4. That's interesting that you choose Mr.Tanimoto he was truly a hero to all the people there he was also truly lucky that he was alive and uninjured. I always got the two different bombs mixed up since I never really looked into the information so I didn't know that the one they used for Hiroshima was the smaller one of the two.

  5. I also really like Mr. Tanimoto. I think it is clear that he is experiencing survivor's guilt because he feels so obligated to help people because he survived the bomb, unharmed. I think your research is great and those numbers really help put things in perspective. With 60% of people being incinerated by the intense heat, is hard to imagine!

  6. I find it interesting that most people were killed by the falling debri. I never knew about how much each bomb weighed. I would like how many died where the bomb hit. You did very good research.

  7. I think it is crazy that a bomb that was actually smaller, did the damage shown throughout the book. I also liked Mr. Tanimoto because he was so selfless and it almost humbled me to read about how the other victims thanked him by bowing after he kindly gave them water. This paints a picture of their culture as a whole in my mind.
