Taylor and Ciera: Laura Ingalls Wilder

For your comments on Presentations:

First, write about something well done.  What did you learn from this group?  What part of the Presentation seemed the best?  Be specific, and use a specific example from the Presentation and your notes.

Second, offer constructive criticism that would help this group. What might have been more clear?  What part of the Presentation seemed the least polished?  Be specific.

  1. Overall, great presentation! I read a couple of her books growing up and I liked how you gave more information on how she wrote them. I liked how you touched on the fact that they started as an autobiography but the editors did not like that idea so she split it up and made them into children's books. One critique for your presentation is maybe focus more on back and forth. I felt one person talked a lot more than the other.

  2. I think you guys did an excellent job discussing the author and thoroughly informed me as an audience member about her life and her inspiration, which are two very important things with a visionary.

The only thing to work on is to have a prep list before the presentation to make sure everything is functioning properly.

  3. I really loved how you included your experience with her books. It made it more personal. You both seemed very well rehearsed and it flowed very nicely. I thought you did a nice job describing her books and explaining her values on home life. The only thing I really didn't like was the music in the background of the video you showed, I could barely hear what the people were saying.

  4. What I learned from this group is that she is an author and she also has an award named after her. Something that could have help this group was to explain a little more about the video that was shown.

  5. One thing I thought you did a good job explaining was her background information. I thought this helped a lot because I didn't know who she was until I realized she was the author of Little House on the Prairie. I've heard the books are very popular but I actually never read any of them. I also loved the quote you ended with. I thought it was very inspiring. One thing I wish you would've done was to compare her with a writer of the world today. It just would've help get a better perspective.

  6. Well done presentation on a sort of well known author, more known by her works than who she was.

The only thing that did not seem as polished was the information about the authors that have won the award more recently, if you are including that information in a presentation you should know at least a bit about the works that they have done.

  7. I liked the general info you gave to let us know who she was before you dived into her vision and legacy, I had only heard the name but only enough that she sounded familiar. I think that you guys could've possibly related her to someone today while still maintaining the main theme of holding on to the past.

  8. I really liked the fact that you both stressed her love and passion for keeping the past alive. Not many people use their platform to do this, so I agree that she is definitely a visionary. However, I felt that you did not have a clear thesis, so I was a little confused as to why you chose her for the assignment at the beginning of your presentation.

  9. Overall, great presentation! I learned a lot about Laura Wilder. I did not know she was a teacher at 16. I also did not realize that her books were based off of her growing up. I thought they were just stories. I think it's great that she wrote these books to help people remember the past. I think broken families and the fast paced way of life people have has completely changed the way family time is spent together. The only critique I would have would be to have a slightly longer clip to show more of Laura's personality.

  10. The presenters did a good job explaining who Laura Wilder was, especially since a lot of us did not know her. One part I liked about the presentation was when Taylor related her own life growing up on a farm to one of Wilder's books. I also liked how detailed the presenters were in explaining what the Wilder award is, and the reasons for it. I liked the theme about family life, and I would have liked to hear how her books could influence people today.

  11. I think you guys did a great job talking about Laura's life and you seemed very informed. I'm glad you guys mentioned that there are museums and plays and such, it made me feel more relatable to the author. I don't think there's anything to critique, other than the music playing during the clip but that's not your guys' fault per say.

  12. I learned so much from your guys presentation. I knew of the books and the show but not much of her as a person at all. I really liked how the clip you showed was showing her personality. One thing I would critique is distributing the information and who is speaking a little more. Overall, I really enjoyed your presentation. I loved how Taylor brought in her own experience I think it really added to your presentation.

  13. Something I learned from this presentation was that she wrote the Little House on the Prairie books based on her life. The best part of the presentation was when they talked about her impact she had on Taylor I thought that by giving a real life example was something really great to add to the whole thing. What they could work on is making sure to explain that the topics they chose were reasons that she was a visionary.

  14. I liked how at the beginning of your presentation you didn't even have a slide to read information off of. This helped to show that you both knew your information and was ready to present. I liked how you shared your personal experience with reading her books (the TV series was also very good). I learned that she has her own museums and libraries (I found that interesting). For next time I would try and find a smoother way to end the presentation.

  15. I really felt like I learned something about Laura Wilder while listening to this presentation. My favorite part about this presentation is the part explaining about the Wilder Award and the accompanying handout that explained the criteria of earning one. This really showed Wilder's impact on today and how she continues to inspire people today as readers and writers.

  16. I love that you guys emphasized that she represented a period in American history, especially for children. I knew how influential she was on the topic of pioneer life, but I didn't know that she was so influential as a children's author. I wish that the slides were a little more interesting to reinforce your presentation.

  17. It was a well planned and organized presentation. I use to read her books all the time. The one thing I never knew about was the award named after her. I also like how you linked the books to your life. I can do the same. Great research.

  18. I had no prior knowledge of who Laura Ingalls-Wilder was and I think that you guys did a really good job explaining who she was. I liked how you explained the Little House on the Prairie was actually about her life. I think you guys could have split the talking up a little better but I think that the overall presentation was great.

  19. I really liked the handout since it wasn't just a timeline, but rather a a piece of information relevant to what her work was and what she actually accomplished.
