Jessica, Wil and Sam: Walt Whitman

For your comments on Presentations:

First, write about something well done.  What did you learn from this group?  What part of the Presentation seemed the best?  Be specific, and use a specific example from the Presentation and your notes.

Second, offer constructive criticism that would help this group. What might have been more clear?  What part of the Presentation seemed the least polished?  Be specific.

  1. Something I think the group did well was focusing more on his writings rather than his life personally, that was more of what these presentations were supposed to be about. It kept our attention more as an audience I think. I don't really think there's anything they could've fixed, they did a great job.

  2. I really loved your guys presentation. You all knew and spoke about really interesting information. My favorite thing about your presentation was when sam was talking about how he really wrote for the people. I think that is so beautiful and really inspiring. One thing I would critique is to distribute speaking about the information a little bit more. I feel like sam did a lot of the speaking but overall your presentation was really good and thought out.

  3. The "handouts" were awesome. The leaves with different quotes for everyone was really creative and showed the spirit of Whitman as far as I can tell. I did not know much about him, so I really enjoyed learning about his free verse poetry and think that any time that people "break the mold" is good progress for the world. One thing I would have like to see more of would be some photos.

  4. I really liked learning about all the poetry works of Walt Whitman. Before this presentation I knew of him but I did not really know what he did or what he wrote. I really enjoyed learning about some of his works and how successful he was. One critique for this presentation is have more eye contact. The presenters seemed to focus on the power point and the professor not so much the students and who they were giving the presentation to.

  5. One thing I really liked about this presentation was the handouts. I thought they were very creative and different then just a piece of paper. I Also enjoyed how each handout included a different quote from Whitman. One thing i thought that could be improved on throughout the presentations was maybe spreading the entirety of the presentation more evenly throughout the group. I think I just noticed Sam talking more than everyone else but when she spoke I could tell she was passionate about the topic so it also added to the presentation.

  6. Something I learned from this presentation was that he broke the barriers of poetry and did his own thing. I thought the presentation was great I think it was the best one out of all of them. They all did a great job at speaking and I thought the best part was when they read his poetry to us I think they read the poetry really well. Something I think they could work on was the conclusion because all they said was "we're done" instead of signaling that the were about to end.

  7. I think the strongest point of your presentation was when you compared Whitman to Dickinson. It just goes to show how different and original his writing was. My only critique is that the presentation could have been slowed down, but it was still very enjoyable!

  8. I like that you focused on the poetry of Walt over himself as an individual. The idea of handing out factual information on a card allowed you to inform the audience without wasting time, also adding the leaf wit poetry was an excellent touch.

The one thing to work on is simply rehearsal, make sure each member has plenty of time to speak and that there are smooth transitions between the team members.

  9. I thought that this presentation went very well. The information cards were interesting and grabbed my attention. The best part of this presentation is that I really felt like I was more focused on the people speaking rather than the PowerPoint itself. The presentation was within the time guidelines. The only criticism I had was the one moment of awkward silence where is seemed like no one wanted to talk.

  10. I thought you did a good job focusing on his writing and I absolutely loved your handouts. They were so cute and creative and that really helped get a better perspective about his life. I also think you did a good job comparing him to Emily Dickinson because many people are familiar about her work. One thing I wish you would've done is maybe show some more pictures in your powerpoint because sometimes it look just a little distracting with all the words that were being used. Overall, you guys did a really good job and did good bouncing back between one another.

  11. Good presentation of an American poet and visionary. Good work focusing on his works and what made him a visionary and progressive thinker of his time.

I thought he did use a few bigger less common words that not everyone may know, so I disagree with your comment that he wouldn't send people to the dictionary. Other than that good job though.

  12. I thought this was very interesting. I liked how you talked about him involving homosexuality in his poems, especially during a very controversial time for homosexuality. I also loved the description of free verse, coming from someone who doesn't know much about poetry, it really helped me understand it. I liked the comparison between Whitman and Emily Dickinson. When read out loud you can really hear a difference in the styles. One criticism is that it seemed like the presentation was very divided, each member had their own section to cover. There was not much switching back and forth. Overall, I really enjoyed this presentation.

  13. It was creative and honestly I enjoyed every second of it. So much so that I can't really think of a thing to do better on. The hand out was creative, everyone talked about the same amount. You blended facts and his poetry together which was a cool way to visualize. I guess if I were to have to put a criticism it would be for Jess and Wil to speak louder, BUT YOU ALL DID GREAT!!!

  14. Honestly, I had never hurt of this poet. I thought you all did a great job explaining who he was and what he did in his lifetime. I thought it was very interesting that he wrote about homosexuality because even now a days people are uncomfortable talking about it. I also found it interesting that he did not fight in the Civil War, but helped in a hospital after his brother was injured. The only thing I would have changed would have been to add a clip about him or a clip from someone that admired him.

  15. I thought that a strength of this presentation was definitely the fact that you all spoke about an aspect of Whitman's work or life that you were familiar with. I also really liked the creative touch that your handout had. The only criticism that I have is that there was an awkward silence where you all stood there not knowing what to say. Other than that, well done!

  16. Honestly never heard of this poet either, but after you read some small scripts, I actually am interested in reading some of his stuff. I liked the comparison you made between the two poets. It made me realize that I think his poems make much more sense to me that the other 'typical' poems. I like the little bit of humor you added to the presentation. You made good eye contact. The hand out was cute and to the point; I really liked it. For next time, maybe some how give examples of where his writing influenced other's writing.

  17. The overall presentation was very well organized. I can see you did a lot of research. I never read any of his books, but after hearing the presentation I am going to go read one of his books. The hand was great.
