Profile Practice Writing Exercise by Betsy Lyons

Katie Wagoner is a senior at The Ohio State University at Marion. She started as an education major but later switched to social work. She is 21 and is from Fredericktown, Ohio.

Katie started her adventure as a buckeye wanting to pursue a degree in education. She always liked working with kids. When one of her brothers was younger, she taught him math and now he is advanced. When Katie thought about the future she wanted to change her major to Social Work to pursue psychology and become a guidance counselor to teens. She then got a job dealing with people who have mental health issues which she enjoys.

When she was in high school, she bonded with her high school guidance counselor, Miss Stager. Miss Stager cared deeply about how everyone was doing. Stager's character influenced Katie to switch her major to social work and to pursue a degree in psychology to do what Miss Stager did. The major influences now in Katie's life are her boyfriend and her parents. Her boyfriend encourages her to not settle and to follow her dreams. When discussing how her parents influenced her life, she said, "My parents are one of my major influences because I am the first one in my family to go to college and hope to complete college." A couple of her relatives went to college, but never finished.

A country needs leaders in order to lead them forward. Katie believes that we need leaders with futuristic visionary qualities to lead us forward. Katie says, "Creativity is needed in order for us to grow." Even if we fail, she believes that it is better to try than not to try. According to her, creativity is important because creativity allows people to come into power and use their new ideas to help guide down the right path. Although Katie is unsure of her future, she has a vision to help others.
