Practice Profile: Taylor Bahan

Elwer demonstrating origami with his love of math by his side

Matt Elwer, freshman at the Ohio State University, Marion campus, shared his future and goals as an individual on September of 2016 as class was ending. Elwer, a mathematics major explained that he is technically sophomore status as he has over 40 hours from his high school days. He also has a passion for origami and hopes to create an independent study in origami next semester. During the interview, Matt answered a few questions that shined some light into himself and goals as a student.

When asked about where he saw himself with his mathematics career, Matt proclaimed that he wanted to be a college professor who also taught origami. He continued to explain math was "interesting because theres always a way to figure things out". He first learned of origami in the 4th grade when he checked out a book from the library. His fascination was later enhanced when a Japanese student study abroad at his school.  Matt also has a love for poetry and named Robert Frost as a historical visionary that has impacted his life. He then told me of one of his favorite movies "Dead Poet Society" with a quote form the movie he paraphrased. "Sucking the marrow out of life". This movie impacted Matt to "experience life in the fullest".

During the interview, Matt explained that his grandpa affected the way he looked at life. He revealed that his grandpa was openly racist and  went on to say growing up around him "affected the way (he) saw the world". With that comment, he concluded the interview with a smile as he admired his choices and visions for his future.

You described his love for math really well. I believe everyone has a love for their favorite subject in school both college and high school. I can sort of relate to that. My favorite subject was science.

  4. I thought this profile was well written! I think you did an awesome job describing him and what he loves to do. I also think it was important to add the comment about him getting started by renting a book from the library.

  5. "Matt Elwer, freshman at the Ohio State University, Marion campus, shared his future and goals as an individual on September of 2016 as class was ending." I like you intro sentence. It just seemed to flow well.

"Matt proclaimed that he wanted to be a college professor who also taught origami." This sounds like an awesome career.

Your closing sentence was very good too. It gave a vision. I could see him doing just that.

  6. Well obviously I would like to write a thoughtful comment to myself. I love they way my interviewer described my passions in life so far and how my choices have affected my life. It got me thinking even one day I am sure I will write a memoir of my life just as my grandpa has so I can pass it down as sort of a legacy.

  8. Origami is a really cool passion to have because that is not something you hear about someone doing everyday, it is a good vision to have a clear understanding of what your passions are and then spending your life in pursuit of those.
